Overview

The Museum of the City of New York (MCNY) features several permanent and temporary exhibitions capturing the past, present, and future of New York. The Museum utilized GZ&A for full-service marketing and communication expertise, including strategic planning, public relations, digital marketing, social media, website development, advertising, event marketing, diversity marketing, market research, group tours, retail sales, public programs, and government and community relations.

Strategy

We sought to raise awareness, boost attendance, and increase fundraising by positioning this cultural institution as a leading attraction to New Yorkers and tourists alike through several public relations and marketing campaigns. Major highlights include: crafting a strategic marketing and communications plan to launch New York at its Core, a landmark permanent exhibition of 400 years of New York history that served as the capstone of a decade-long $100M renovation of the Museum; developing strategic partnerships with domestic and international tourism groups and community and government agencies; creating Gotham Groove, a 30-hour round-the-clock public festival; and promoting several exhibitions focused on art, history, and culture.

Results

During the first year of our work together, Museum attendance increased by more than 30 percent. GZ&A implemented comprehensive communications and marketing plans that spanned all Museum departments and activities. Our e-commerce partnership deals with companies including Amazon Local, Groupon, Goldstar, HowAboutWe, Living Social, Eventbrite and Red Rover provided exposure to nearly 10 million New Yorkers and tourists from around the world. And GZ&A secured placements for dozens of exhibitions and public programs in major media outlets, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CBS Sunday Morning, Vanity Fair, Financial Times, Fast Company, New York Magazine, New York Post, New York Daily News, Metro New York and many other arts, culture and design publications.
